Outdoor Team Adventures: Team-Building Ideas for UK Companies

4 min read

The best outdoor team building ideas in the UK get people out of the office, working towards a shared goal and talking to colleagues they rarely sit next to. A walk across beautiful countryside does all of that, without anyone needing special skills. Whether you want a single day out or a multi-day charity challenge, here are ideas that work for teams of all sizes and fitness levels, plus tips on planning one your colleagues will actually enjoy.

Why outdoor team building works

  • Shared goals build connection. Reaching a finish line together creates a story your team will talk about for years.

  • Everyone can take part. Walking is accessible to most people, and teams can move at different paces while still sharing the day.

  • Conversations happen naturally. Hours side by side on a trail do more for relationships than an afternoon of icebreakers.

  • Fresh air and a change of scene. Time outdoors is a welcome break from screens and meetings.

  • It can do good, too. Adding a charity element turns a team day into something bigger.

8 outdoor team building ideas for UK companies

1. A team day walk with a view

A single-day walk on a scenic route – downs, hills or coast – with a picnic or pub lunch at the end. Simple, inclusive and easy to organise for large groups. The photo at the top of this post is from one of our corporate team days.

2. A multi-day trail challenge

Walk a National Trail together over 3 or 4 days: Hadrian’s Wall, the West Highland Way, the Cleveland Way, the Jurassic Coast or the Cotswold Way. It’s a bigger commitment, with real training involved, and the sense of shared achievement is huge.

3. A corporate charity challenge

Pick a cause – one your company already supports, or one your team chooses together – and fundraise as you walk. Our charity partners are Sense, SANE and Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice, and your team can also walk for any charity.

4. Mixed-level challenges

Not everyone wants the same level of effort. On our routes there are three ways to take part: Enjoy (day pack only), Endeavour (10kg+ plus food and water) and Endure (15kg+ plus food and water). Colleagues can choose their own level and still finish together.

5. Relay-style challenges

Split a long route into legs so different team members take on different days. Everyone contributes, and the whole team shares the final distance.

6. A training programme as a team

The run-up to a big walk is a team-builder in itself. Organise lunchtime walks and weekend training hikes using our 12-week training plan.

7. A step or distance challenge in the office

Track miles across teams for a month and build up to an outdoor finale. Good for including remote and hybrid staff.

8. A bespoke team event

Work with our events team to design something specific to your company: your choice of route, distance and format, we start with a plank page or build on classic routes.

Day walk or multi-day challenge?

A day walk is the easiest place to start. It suits large, mixed groups, needs little training and fits into a normal working week. It’s a great choice for a summer social, an away day or a welcome event for new starters.

A multi-day challenge asks more of everyone, but it gives back more too. Teams train together for weeks beforehand, share evenings at camp, and cross the finish line with a genuine sense of achievement. It works especially well for teams who want a big goal to rally around, or who are combining team building with fundraising. Our 2027 multi-day challenges run from May to September, so there’s a date to suit most calendars.

How to plan an outdoor team event

  1. Set your purpose. Bonding, wellbeing, fundraising, celebrating a milestone – or all of these.

  2. Know your group. Ask about fitness, experience, access needs and dietary requirements early.

  3. Choose the right distance. A day walk suits mixed groups; multi-day challenges suit teams who want a big shared goal.

  4. Allow time to train. For multi-day events, give people at least 12 weeks.

  5. Sort the logistics. Transport, food, safety cover and accommodation are where events succeed or struggle – this is where a specialist helps.

  6. Celebrate the finish. Photos, personalised finishers keepsakes and a proper debrief turn a great day into a lasting memory.

Why work with Endurotrek?

We’ve been working in the outdoor and adventure industry for over 20 years, and our corporate partners have included Barclays and Sky. Our events are supported challenge events, not guided walks: everyone walks at their own pace, and we handle the logistics. Depending on the event, that includes:

  • Checkpoints with drinks and snacks

  • Support staff throughout

  • Camping, with a hot breakfast and a packed lunch

  • Baggage transfer

  • A medical team

  • A personalised finishers keepsake for every finisher

We hold a 5.0 Google rating, and individual places can be paid in 3 interest-free with PayPal.

FAQs

What are good outdoor team building activities in the UK?

Team walks, multi-day trail challenges, charity challenges and distance challenges all work well, because they’re inclusive and give the group a shared goal.

What is a corporate charity challenge?

It’s a team event where colleagues take on a physical challenge, such as a multi-day trek, while fundraising for a charity.

How do you make team building inclusive?

Choose an activity most people can do, offer different levels of effort, and ask about access and dietary needs early.

How far in advance should we plan a team challenge?

For a multi-day walk, allow at least 3–4 months so people have 12 weeks to train. Day walks can be organised more quickly.

Can a whole company take part in a walking challenge?

Yes. Walking scales well, and mixed levels (such as Enjoy, Endeavour and Endure) let everyone take part at a level that suits them.
