Your First Big Adventure: Best Multi-Day Walks in the UK for Beginners

5 min read

The best long-distance walks in the UK for beginners are well-waymarked National Trails with good paths, no scrambling and plenty of support along the way – and Britain has some of the finest in the world. Your first multi-day walk is a special thing: waking up and walking on, day after day, through landscapes that change around you. This post picks five great routes, explains what to expect and shows how to make your first one go smoothly.

What makes a good first multi-day walk?

  • Clear waymarking. National Trails are signposted with the acorn symbol (or thistle in Scotland), so navigation is straightforward.

  • Good paths, no technical sections. You want walking, not climbing.

  • Easy logistics. Getting to the start, having somewhere to sleep, and getting home again.

  • Scenery that keeps you going. A route that’s beautiful makes every mile feel worthwhile.

  • Support if you need it. Especially for a first time, knowing help is close by takes away a lot of worry.

Option 1: walk it at your own speed, or join a supported challenge

Most people walk National Trails over a week or more, at 10–15 miles a day, booking their own accommodation. That’s a lovely way to do it.

Another option is a supported challenge event. With Endurotrek, you walk the route in 3 or 4 days at your own pace, and we handle the logistics: checkpoints with drinks and snacks, support staff throughout, camping, a hot breakfast and packed lunch, baggage transfer, a medical team and a personalised finishers keepsake at the finish. Daily distances are longer (22–31 miles), so you’ll need to train, but you don’t need to plan anything else – and you’ll share the adventure with other walkers.

Every route has three ways to take part: Enjoy (day pack only – the natural choice for a first big walk), Endeavour (10kg+ plus food and water) and Endure (15kg+ plus food and water).

The 5 best multi-day walks in the UK for beginners

Coast to coast across northern England beside the Roman wall, past forts, milecastles and dramatic crags. The National Trail is 84 miles; our challenge covers 80 miles in 3 days (26, 29 and 25 miles), 11–13 June 2027, for £349 or a £75 deposit. Paths are good and easy to follow. Read our post on the Hadrian’s Wall walk in 3 days.

The Dorset coast from Lyme Regis to Studland Bay, past Golden Cap, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. Our challenge is 72 miles in 3 days (25, 25 and 22 miles), 9–11 July 2027, for £399 or a £79 deposit. It’s the shortest total distance of our routes, but expect plenty of short, steep climbs.

Scotland’s most popular long-distance trail, from Milngavie to Fort William via Loch Lomond, Rannoch Moor and Glencoe. Well-made paths make it a great first Scottish adventure. Our challenge is 96 miles in 4 days (24, 26, 23 and 23 miles), 27–30 May 2027, for £449 or a £75 deposit. See our West Highland Way in 4 days post.

Honey-stone villages, beech woods and views from the Cotswold escarpment, from Chipping Campden to Bath. Our challenge is 102 miles in 4 days (25, 28, 27 and 22 miles), 10–13 September 2027. Bookings aren’t open yet – you can register your interest.

Heather moorland and then North Sea cliffs, from Helmsley to Filey. Our challenge is 109 miles in 4 days (26, 31, 28 and 24 miles), 6–9 May 2027, for £429. It’s our longest route, so it’s a good second adventure, or a first one if you’re already a keen walker.

What to expect on your first multi-day walk

  • Day one feels exciting. Start steady – it’s easy to go too fast.

  • Day two is often the hardest mentally. Legs are stiff in the morning but loosen up after the first hour.

  • Feet need attention. Deal with any rubbing straight away.

  • Evenings are a highlight. Food, stories and a sense of shared achievement at camp.

  • The finish is unforgettable. And you’ll probably be planning the next one before you get home.

How to get ready

  1. Follow a training plan. Our 12-week training plan builds you up to back-to-back long days.

  2. Sort your kit early. Use our multi-day kit list and test everything on training walks.

  3. Walk with friends. Training is more fun with company, and many people sign up together.

  4. Consider walking for a cause. A charity place gives you extra motivation – you can support Sense, SANE, Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice or any charity you choose. There are three ways to take a charity place: a £75 registration fee with a £799 fundraising target, a £225 registration fee with a lower fundraising target of £499, or the full event price (this varies by event) and raise whatever you can. We ask that you raise at least 50% of your target 4 weeks before the event start date. *subject to change Find out more about charity places.

FAQs

What is the easiest long-distance walk in the UK?

There’s no single answer, but well-waymarked National Trails with good paths, such as Hadrian’s Wall Path and the West Highland Way, are popular first choices.

What is a good 3-day hike in the UK?

Hadrian’s Wall (80 miles on our challenge) and the Jurassic Coast (72 miles) both work well as 3-day supported challenges.

How far can a beginner walk in a day?

Most beginners can walk 10–15 miles a day. With 12 weeks of training, many people build up to 20–25+ miles on consecutive days.

Do I need experience for a multi-day walk?

No, but you do need to train. Start with regular walks and build up to long back-to-back days.

Is it better to walk alone or with a group?

Both have their appeal. A supported group event gives you company, safety and someone else handling the logistics, while still letting you walk at your own pace.
